This is the second book in the Merely Players series. The first was fantastic, but I think I liked this one even more. The story centers around Paul, a tall gorgeous guy who’s sweet as well as sexy. Paul is torn between two beautiful and very different women who are best friends. When the book starts, he’s dating one of them, but the women keep teasing and confusing him. He discovers they have a secret—and becomes even more confused. This is a lovely, sensitive, and roaring hot portrait of three people dabbling in polyamory for the first time. It’s a love story, and is unexpectedly tender. I loved how the characters of the two women, Haley and Becky, were further developed in this book. I found myself identifying a lot more with Becky in this one than I had in the previous book.Much of the story takes place during the filming of a TV show. The details around this are so exact that I think it was either very well researched or the author actually worked on a show at one time. Great details!
So, if you’re looking for a sweet, sexy read with characters you’ll want to invite over, pick up this book!

That was the first book I have read by Mr. Ian D. Smith so I wasn't burdened with any expectations. It was interesting to read an erotic romance written by a man and giving us a unique male point of view that we don't see very often in this genre.
The King’s Captain is a book 2 out of Mr. Smith’s series Merely Players but it can be easily read as a standalone. The story, characters and their relationships are interesting enough, easy to relate to and understand even without the back story. Writing is easy, it flows like a fairy tale and slowly draws you in the story. The author does a fantastic job out of the sex scenes and gives us a very realistic feel of what it’s like to be a man caught between two lovely but very teasing and confusing ladies. Add a bit of suspense, paranormal subplot and colorful supporting characters that would often steal the show. There were some angst situations but not to such an extent that they would depress you. All of this makes for a very pleasant, fine erotic romance novella. I thoroughly enjoyed it and that is saying something, given that I usually love my romantic stories with a heavy dose of BDSM.
Paul, the novella’s leading man, is an over six-foot eye candy of a jousting stunt performer. Usually, that description is accompanied by a typical Alpha Male (or what passes as an alpha male in most of the erotic romance) personality with a very limited emotional range. I’m glad that the author decided to make a twist here. Paul is genuinely a nice person who is trying to do the best and right thing for everyone around him and for himself. It was endearing and dare I say empowering to see that the opposite sex stresses over love, sex, feelings and relationships just as much as we do. It is difficult to keep your balance when you don’t want to hurt anyone but you get confusing messages. It is even more difficult when you are constantly being teased and pleased by two charming, naughty ladies.
Hayley and Becky were both adorable in their own ways, different and similar with their unique flaws, insecurities and past problems that hinder them in the present. What I loved was that in spite of their issues they struck me as pretty sexually confident and unashamed of their desires. At times it seemed that Paul was the inexperienced student whose eyes they had to open for all the pleasure and opportunities that could open for their triad if they let go of their inhibitions.
Like I said above, I also loved the supporting characters, especially Mark and Maggie and I hope they’d get a book of their own soon.
I won’t give too much of the plot away but as a conclusion, that is a lovely, heart-warming and arousing story of three people who find affection and passion with each other in an unconventional way. It also points out how important communication is, especially when three hearts are involved. I look forward to reading more of Ian Smith’s upcoming work.
Smith has done it again! This novella goes more in depth with Paul's, Hayley's, and Becky's relationships and has a supernatural element as well! One that I get the feeling isn't quite done yet. Hotness! I hope we see more of Mark and Maggie. Paul does discover something about Hayley and Becky that also throws him for a loop. But, imo, it only adds to the heat of the story. Definitely want to read more!
Another brilliant entry in the series. Paul's still a bit too much of a nice guy for his own good, but his lovely ladies Hayley and Becky guide him through properly. Excellent blend of action, heart, mystery, and heat. All of it wrapped up with a pretty bow...at least until book three! Also great to see Mark and Maggie make their appearance. Can't wait for their series (hint hint). On to book three...
The King's Captain (Merely Players, Book 2) is a continuation of Smith's first book-the story of a widower, Paul, turned Medieval historical player, who connects romantically with not one, but two women, Haley and Becky.
Writing a series is always tricky as the author must bring readers along who have not read prior installment(s). Smith handles this task well without a boring data dump.
In this episode the threesome explore their deepening relationship while finding themselves drawn into a television production with fictional characters experiencing the same emotional roller coaster.
There is a brief dramatic interlude, I won't spoil, which supplied good tension and drama. Would have liked more of this.
Readers will delight in Smith's dexterity with Shakespearian-like dialogue, mixed with common British terms which may seem strange to Yankee ears.
I enjoyed this story as much as I enjoyed the first installment in the series. In the first book, Paul, Hayley and Becky had just started the threesome thing. In the story it had progressed but more with Hayley and Becky popping in now and again to part-take.
By any standards, this set-up will make your toes curl as you follow the two, sometimes three, characters into the bedroom and witness the various positions and escapades they get into.
What’s great about this book is that it’s all told from the male perspective. What an enlightening and informative book. If you are looking for a fun-filled ride in the bedroom, then this is the book for you.
